Fractals Coffee; Coffee with a Purpose
To trace the history of Fractals, you really need to go back to rural Appalachia a century ago. My family grew up here, my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all came and spent their childhood in Hayesville, NC. When her hundred acre dairy farm was flooded to build Lake Chatuge, we lost what little generational wealth we had. Our family came up from the rural poverty indicative of so many parts of our mountains and because of this fact; generations of our family have spent their lives trying to improve the lives of others.
I have spent 20 years working in juvenile services in North Carolina. My mother, Sarah, is a licensed professional counselor and taught counseling at a local college for over a decade before her retirement. One of my brothers has worked his entire adult life in the Health and Human Service field as well, and one of my sisters is a nurse practitioner. Our whole family shares a heart for this region, and a want to see her people prosper.
This is a big part of who we are, and even though we have now shifted to operate this coffee shop, we still want to be active in our community. Many of our classes and events are offered at low or no cost to participants. They are designed to provide opportunities for the people of our region, teaching valuable skills as well as trying to excite them about education and a future that transcends their past. The world is changing rapidly and Appalachia has been left behind before - we want to ensure that doesn't happen again as the technological and information revolutions continue to sweep our country.
So then, behind the scenes, we are going to be active in our community. To this end, we will subsidize many of our classes and programs to help those without the disposable income to participate. We will work closely with community groups, health and human services facilities, local charities and churches, and our neighbors in Asheville to ensure that we make our community as strong as it can be, eliminate poverty and bring each other up together.
AND NOW THE PITCH... We are always looking for partners! Want to volunteer with us; no experience necessary - you can help to make a difference in your community with us. Would you like to contribute financially or materially, because we have families that can use everything from old washing machines to school clothes. You can help families in need have the things that many of us never did as children. You can make a difference, directly, getting to know the people who you are helping. It only takes a little bit of your time and effort but has the potential to change your perspective on everything.
